What we do

Fractional CTO

Senior technical leadership when you need it — without a full-time hire you're not ready for.
A fractional CTO gives a startup the thing it most often lacks and can least afford to get wrong: experienced technical judgment. You might be a non-technical founder who needs someone to own the technology decisions, a technical founder who's stretched too thin to also set architecture and hire well, or a team that needs senior direction for a critical stretch without committing to a full-time executive salary.
MetaProject provides fractional CTO and senior architect support — real leadership on the decisions that shape your next few years, plus the hands-on architecture depth to make sure those decisions are sound.

What a fractional CTO does for you

Sets technical direction — architecture, stack, and the sequencing of what to build and when, tied to your business and funding stage.
De-risks the big decisions — build vs buy, when to scale, what to defer, which trade-offs will matter at Series A that don't matter now.
Owns technical hiring — role scoping, interview design, and the judgment to find the senior hires worth waiting for (and to avoid the expensive wrong ones).
Represents technology to the outside — investor due diligence, security questionnaires, enterprise buyers' technical scrutiny.
Keeps delivery honest — realistic estimates, sane process, and the ability to tell you when a plan won't work before it fails.

Where the "expertise gap" usually is

Most startups don't need a full engineering leadership team — they need senior expertise in one or two areas that are currently a blind spot: the architecture that has to survive the next 10× of growth, the security posture an enterprise deal now requires, the data foundation before an AI feature, the platform decisions before the team doubles. A fractional CTO/architect fills exactly that gap — and pulls in the deeper capability behind it when a specific problem needs it: software architecture consulting, platform engineering, DevSecOps, or data engineering.

How we work

We embed at the cadence you need — a few days a month for steady direction, or more intensively through a critical stretch (a raise, a rebuild, a first enterprise customer). We work with your team, in your tools, on your real decisions, and we document the reasoning (ADRs, a lightweight technical roadmap) so nothing important lives only in one person's head. As your team grows and your permanent leadership takes shape, our involvement steps back by design — the aim is a company that runs its own technology, not a dependency dressed up as a retainer. See Exit by Design.

Why us

Senior-only
You get an experienced operator and architect, not a generalist advisor reading from a playbook.
Leadership and depth
Many fractional CTOs advise but can't go deep on the architecture; we do both, and bring in specialist capability when a problem warrants it.
Capability-first
We strengthen your team and hand over cleanly — a fractional CTO whose job is partly to make the full-time hire succeed, not to block them.

When to bring us in

You're a non-technical founder who needs someone to own technology decisions.
You're a technical founder too stretched to also set architecture and hire.
You're heading into a raise or enterprise deal and need your technology to stand up to scrutiny.
You're about to make an expensive, hard-to-reverse technical decision and want senior judgment first.
You need senior direction for a defined period without hiring a full-time CTO yet.

F. A. Q.

What does a fractional CTO actually do?

Provides experienced technical leadership part-time — setting architecture and technical direction, de-risking major decisions, owning technical hiring, representing technology to investors and customers, and keeping delivery realistic — without the cost and commitment of a full-time executive.

How is a fractional CTO different from a consultant or an advisor?

An advisor gives opinions from the sidelines. A fractional CTO takes ownership of technical decisions and outcomes, works inside your team, and can also go hands-on with the architecture. We do both the leadership and the depth.

How much time do you commit?

It flexes to your stage — from a few days a month for ongoing direction to a more intensive engagement through a critical period. We scope it to what you actually need.

Will you help us hire a permanent CTO?

Yes. Part of the role is often to give a future full-time CTO or founding engineers a solid foundation — and to help scope and run that hire. Our involvement is designed to step back as your permanent leadership takes over.

Can you also build, not just advise?

Yes. Alongside the fractional CTO role we can bring in senior engineers for architecture, platform, MVP, or product work — see MVP Development and Software Product Development.
